John Wai Kung Fu Instructors



Head instructor John Wai - began training Kung Fu as a kid while growing up in Hong Kong and began teaching in the mid 1980’s. Since then he’s produced many champions in forms, weaponry and full contact fighting. In 1997, John Wai Kung Fu opened its doors and quickly earned the reputation for providing the highest quality martial arts. John is the Vice President of the U.S. Traditional Kung Fu Wushu Federation and holds a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.


Senior Instructor Bill Wright - began his training under the late Master Lee Koon Hung has over 22 years of training in Choy Lay Fot. Bill has also trained in Fu style Tia Chi, Yang style Tai Chi, internal style Lok Hop Bat Fa and Chi Gong, in addition to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Bill is highly respected in the Kung Fu Tournament circuit having gone undefeated for 3 consecutive years.


Senior Instructor Dossy Lewin - began her Kung Fu in training 1989, first studying Northern Eagle Claw and acquiring a black belt. For the last 17 years, Dossy has been training in Choy Lay Fut, in which she also has a black belt. In addition, Dossy has several gold medals in both forms and weaponry.


Senior Instructor Martin Dvorok - began his extensive martial arts training as a young man in Europe and has over 30 years of experience. His disciplines including Judo, Jiu Jitsu, Karate and Wushu. In 1999, he began his training of Choy Lay Fut Kung Fu and through a strong training ethic and natural ability he quickly advanced and earned his black sash.


Senior Instructor Curline Dvorok - has been training Choy Lay Fut Kung Fu for over 13 years. She is a top competitor in forms and weapons and a 3 time Grand Champion. Curline is a dedicated member of our Dragon and Demo Team, performing in forms, weapons and as a musician. Curline also provides private lessons in Kung Fu.


Instructor Tamer Mahfouz - began as a student at John Wai Kung Fu Academy in 1997 at the age of 5 and by 14 received his black belt. Tamar also holds a blue belt Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and is trained in Muay Thai, Sanshou and Mixed Martial Arts. Over nearly 2 decades, Tamar has won 50 medals in Kung Fu competitions including silver medals at both Grappler’s Quest and Naga.


Instructor Michael O’Connell - has been training kickboxing for 8 years and practicing Sanshou for the past 2 years. Michael also holds NCAA powerlifting titles in back squat at 205lb and 231 lb weight class. He also won the USAPL NY championship silver medal.


Instructor Lian Chung Valuntes - began studying Kung Fu at the age of 4 and has been a student at John Wai Kung Fu for the past 10 years. Lian has studied Choy Lay Fut, Northern Shaolin Eagle Claw and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. She recently won the Teen Girls Grand Champion and won a gold, silver and bronze medal in forms and currently ranks a Black Belt.  


Instructor Maurice Morrison II - has been training for the past 14 years, half of which have been at John Wai Kung Fu Academy. Maurice has trained in Hung Ga, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in which he holds a blue belt, Sanshou, Choy Lay Fut and wrestling. He has won gold medals in Naga and ICMAC forms and fighting. Maurice is ranked black belt.


Assistant Instructor Dylan Mungal - has been training in Kung Fu for the past 11 years studying forms such as Choy Lat Fut, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Sanshou and wrestling. Dylan has also won several bronze, silver and gold medals from ICMAC for forms and fighting. Dylan is ranked black belt.

Paul Zarrella - is a skilled boxing instructor and is always a positive presence in the gym.  He brings many layers to his training and is always able to get the best out of our members.

Vanessa Chang - has been with John Wai Kung Fu academy since 2015. She trains in kung fu, kickboxing, Sanshou and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Vanessa's kickboxing classes are intense, you are guaranteed to feel the burn.
